Gig Recap: Elephant Gym (TW), The Twenties, SNSOS (Yugong Yishan 04.01.2017)

A pleasant early 2017 surprise – it’s not often I get to check out bands from Taiwan so I jumped at the opportunity when a enthusiast music junkie mentioned that one of his favorites bands out of the country were in town. And was I ever glad – Taiwanese math rock trio Elephant Gym are a hell of a trio – energetic, buoyant, and dare I say cute as all hell, bass-driven rhythms that keeps your neurons firing on all cylinders. The band which formed back in 2012 in Kaohsuing, recently returned from a two year hiatus (mandatory army stint) and they brought with them their new EP Work. Better yet, some of 2016’s best bands got the chance to strut their stuff on the big stage including indie rockers The Twenties, who continue to sneak in new songs every time I see them, and She Never Sings Our Songs (SNSOS) who just about stole the spotlight from the openers. Not a bad way to kick off the new year.
