Split Works pulled off the surprising feat of an afternoon showcase earlier this month with the US indie pop outfit Japanese Breakfast, led by the bubbly, charismatic Michelle Zauner. Packed with lively, ‘possibly still buzzed from the previous night’ fans, spirits were high as the rollicking indie rock band took the stage. Atmospheric and intimate yet poppy and engaging, the band played the whole spectrum of their sound – from the driving psychedelica of ‘Driving Woman’ to softly coy ‘Boyish’ to the gleeful delirious ‘Everybody Wants to Love You’. A satisfying multi-course meal of indie pop. Support came from local indietronic duo Nocturnes, whose lush, finely groomed arrangements and robust vocals never sounded better.
