MV Weekly: Nekroma, Alpine Decline

Nekroma – Hemlock

For the past year, Beijingers have been getting a taste for the metamorphous of Guiguisuisui via Nekroma, which finds the duo in full of avant-garde doom prog mode alongside the remains of the now defunct hard-edged instrumental group Nakoma. Part gothic punk opera, part prog metal throwback, they look right at home in their art-punk music video for their single ‘Hemlock Groove’ shot by Graeme Nicol. ‘At what point does love and affection die as the ecosystem collapses around us?’ the band asks – a valid question indeed.

Alpine Decline – Diamond Cutter

Alpine Decline, the euphoric indie fuzz rock outfit that has racked up accolade after accolade for their releases with Maybe Mars, have been making waves back in their home state of California – using the new landscape to expand their sound, and while they’re at it make some really trippy music videos like the one above directed by old Beijing hand Maya Rudolph which feels like something straight out of a 60s era low budget science fiction film with a one of a kind aesthetically inventive invader (a cross between Thing, Big Foot, and disco).
