An antagonistic assault on the senses that gloriously veers off into the deep end and revels in the trenches of hip-hop, drum n bass, and experimental music – Beijing-based duo Deadly Cradle Death – made up of veteran rockers He Fan (Birdstriking) and Liu Xinyu (Chui Wan/Sleeping Dogs) is boundless in its madcap musicality and deviance. Cathartic punk music filtered through one distortion after another; electronic music hooked up to an IV drip of ketamine – it’s music that’s unapologetic, wily and mischievous, and tailor-made for the strange and beautiful beast that Beijing has become over the years.

Taking a cue from such bands as SMZB, Brain Failure, and various other punk bands on the frontlines of social injustice, it’s pure unadulterated punk rock (with welcomed shades of ska) that’s acts as both a rallying call and a hell of a good time. With an acute ability to connect and put themselves on the same stage as their listeners – their songs have a timeless working-class quality to them – one that throws its arm around you and instills hope as you’re invited to sing along.

Hailing from North China, Frozen Moon manages to feel like both a throwback to heavy metal and a contemporary take on the folk metal scene that’s slowly been taking the country by storm. Instilling a Chinese operatic quality that calls to mind Second Hand Rose whilst relishing in the raw riffage and vocal aplomb of old school heavy metal as well as a rich layering of black-tinted pagan folk metal that’s not afraid to have some fun, there’s a refined musicality to the band’s music that never dips into overkill. Equal parts lively and dramatic, with the chops to elevate it to the next level, Frozen Moon are a fine addition to the scene.

Chengdu’s Stolen have amped up their sound over the years, veering wildly into techno-rock territory, turning their almost gothic take on post-punk on its head with propulsive dark wave buzz. With some serious clout behind them now, the band heads back into the vortex and rewires some of their earlier most beloved tracks. Not so much a remix than a reimagining, the new production on these tracks is staggeringly different – adding a layer of gloss and kinetic magnetism that engulfs you. Your mileage may vary depending on your relationship to the band’s music prior – but it’s nevertheless fascinating hearing the band use everything at their disposal to rock out with the best of them.
