Nasty Wizard Recordings is probably too proud to present its latest slice of doom/white noise/free jazz destruction: the split EP between Beijing’s doom jazz cult DFA1989, and Berlin’s merchants of blast noise brilliance, Cuntroaches

Available for streaming on the Nasty Wizard Recordings Bandcamphttps://nastywizardrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/dfa89-cuntroaches

On Side A: DFA 1989 is a contemporary doom experimental collective with a somewhat permanent line up that may or may not originate from the forests of Lichtenstein, currently based in Beijing, China. DFA89 experience is not just an audible one, rather a satirical spiritual one: like a self help book filled with anecdotal rambling of Lovecraftian nightmares and anti-jazz dreamscapes. DFA89 invites you beyond, into the waiting room of oblivion.

On Side B:  Berlin’s noise-punk outfit Cuntroaches welcome you to hell. Their output includes a strange amalgamation of industrial and dub-tinted sounds – “whacked out crazy punk with almost unbearable levels of reverberation,” and they have performed across Europe alongside the likes of Cocaine Piss, Puff, Lubricant, and others. Described as “ferociously warped hardcore-flecked no wave” (The Quietus), Cuntroaches self-released Demo in 2016, and EP in 2017. Their unbridled, ferocious and coarse brand of noise veers across industrial, mechanic sounds.

On September 7 Nasty Wizard Recordings will be releasing a split digital/cassette EP which pairs China based electronic producer Lastboss with German experimental composer EMERGE. The split is part of an ongoing project by Beijing based label Nasty Wizard Recordings to connect musical and visual artists around the world, coupling Lastboss’s sci-fi ambient beats with EMERGE’s immersive industrial drones, packaged with the artwork of British artist Lee Prescott. The EP is available digitally and on a limited run of 100 cassette tapes.

The release is available for streaming on the Nasty Wizard Recordings Bandcamp: https://nastywizardrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/lastboss-emerge

On side A of the release we find U.K. born, China-based producer Lastboss aka. Tate McNeil. As a multi talented producer whose work spans almost every electronic genre thinkable (notably being a big part of Tokyo’s breakcore scene in years past) here we see Lastboss showing off his flair for ambient bliss, murky drones, and sci-fi weirdness, with four cuts that serve as the perfect introduction to the eclectic nature of the Lastboss sound. It opens with ‘Crow’, a recreation of track produced over a decade ago, a dark and brooding atmosphere piece that would sit right at home in the Bladerunner 2049 soundtrack. Next the ironically titled ‘Linguistic Imperialism’ descends to murkier depths, going deep on the dark side of ambience. ‘Hanging Horse’ picks up the pace with a cyber-industrial piece that speaks of future-shocked Asian cities with a beat lurking somewhere under the surface. Finally ‘Journal’ welcomes you into an inner sanctum of soothing church organ that mingles with harps and off kilter drums before the hard edged bass kick in and the beat shuffles around you, rising and rising up and up, nicely bookending this side of the release.

On side B we find prolific German experimental composer EMERGE aka. Sascha Stadlmeier. The EMERGE sound is not one that can be easily pigeonholed as by design the work is not meant to fit into a narrowly defined categories. Instead by drawing inspiration from the traditions of experimental and noise music EMERGE aims to make listeners focus on the sounds, from which atmospheres and soundscapes quite literally emerge, being unique to the perceptions and biases of the individual listener. In this instance we are presented with ‘Re-emanate’, a recycling of a digital download only track that was previously released on the Australian label Misspelled records. Yet this isn’t a simple re-issue, but rather a mutation: sounds were neither added or deleted, instead reworked and to create something totally fresh. In the artist’s own words: “As all these original works are quite old it’s kind of dealing with my past, it’s a kind of going back to roots by treating sounds in a more contemporary way”. The contemporary here is akin to a chilly dungeon of doom groans and low end rumble, through which fragments of beats drift, giving way to ambient drones that draw you closer to the center of something unseen. Over the course of the seventeen minutes and nineteen seconds EMERGE invites you to lie back and let your imagination play with the sounds, and discover what wonderfully twisted places you might end up in.

Finally, on the cover of the release we find the artwork of Lee Prescott, a China-based British artist and a long term collaborator with Lastboss. Influenced by the minimalism of Bauhaus and Russian Revolutionary era art, Lee’s style is typified by simple motifs and sparse but striking use of colour, which is probably why his work has paired with Lastboss’s so well (the Lastboss Bandcamp page is like a permanent exhibition of Lee’s work). The piece used for this release also nicely complement’s the EMERGE track, given the non-linear quality of both, the journey from inception to completion being as much a mystery for the artist as the audience. As Lee explains, “I knew I wanted something geometric. With geometric stuff it all depends on the first shape that I draw. Everything stems from that. I draw the first few shapes and then I think of how I can work within those shapes. I’ll have more of an idea of what I want to do at this point. I’ll then start working into the initial shapes. Once that’s finished, I can draw the rest of the shapes and then work within them.”

The order of Nasty Wizards is ecstatic to present another slice of underground ruckus from East Asia, this time going back to to our roots with sweaty dudes, guitars, and not a synthesizer in sight for a change. On the one side of the tape we have GENIUS, a three piece rock ‘n’ roll band from Busan, South Korea. On the other side of the tape we find another trio hailing from the other side of the Yellow Sea: grunge torch bearers Jiao (Banana Tree) from Wuhan, China.

You can listen to the split here or click the link at the end of the post: https://nastywizardrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/genius

On side A Genius blast out the gate with a three track attack of garage rock and roll, a sound that dares you not to bob up and down like am empty soju bottle in the waters of Haeundae beach. Genius sits somewhere between Weezer and Hank Williams III, yet uniquely there own partly to the lyrics and delivery of Kim Il Du, an acclaimed solo musician in his right (2016 KMA Nominee for Best Folk Album, 2013 GQ Korea’s Voice of the Year). Yet Genius is a sum of its parts: the raw power of the opening ‘Until I’m 88 Years Old’ contrasted with the conclusion ‘Until I’m 88 Years Old (slow version)’ demonstrates how Steve C (bass) and Lee Chung Mok (drums) are able to bring intensity to the bands music with volume but also with grooves and tasty licks, while ‘Left Shoulder’ perfectly balances the two (and may or may not abruptly cut out on purpose). If the brilliance of Genius is indeed a lucky mistake, then the Nasty Wizards count themselves blessed to be able to commit to magnetic tape.

On side B Wuhan grunge revivalists Jiao (Banana Tree), bring their disillusioned angst to full fruition with three tracks (and a fitting epilogue) of unruly, down and out rock and roll that feels like a nosedive into the deep end of someone’s unfiltered id. As a band with a turbulent past of shifting line ups, break ups, and fuck ups the bruised and battered frame staggers out of the shadows with ‘Mephilas’ in a flurry of tortured riffs, burial hymns, and heavy beats that refuses to let up. From there it’s either like being given a tour of someones suicidal thoughts notebook or the perfect soundtrack for you and a gaggle of friends to decompose to the night after consuming enough intoxicants to kill a horse: ‘Diane’, ‘Duran Duran’, and ‘JIAO’ (an exercise in brilliant minimalism?) present an inescapable drug-addled transformation of one’s psyche and physical body. It’s a dark albeit fun journey that the band captures perfectly with lyrically honesty. No cheap tricks, no guileless hooks – just raw energy spewing forth – the real deal.

The release is available in tape and digital formats, featuring artwork created by blending the original artwork of both bands’ original EPs. At some junction the split release may also be issued on wax cylinder or some other equally arcane medium that will be as much use as a chocolate teapot, but for the release will be spread around merch tapes, record shops, and hard drives in formats people can actually listen to. The Nasty Wizards are positively tickled pink to be able to draw a link between China and South Korea and to do so with two bands that bring the noise in the most brilliant way. Listening advice: play at a volume that will sour relations with everyone in your neighborhood.

The last week of September 2017 will be forever remembered as a particularly significant point in world history. Not because various madmen who somehow became world leaders threatened to blow up the world, again. Not because climate catastrophes almost certainly caused by human beings wreaked havoc and misery around the globe while factories and oil refineries chugged along like it’s business as usual. Not because Australia announced it would be creating its own space agency. No, it will be remembered because Nasty Wizard Recordings released a split tape between Liquid Palace and (((connection_error))), a dual EP that dived to new depths of audio depravity and presented some of the weirdest electronic soundscapes being crafted in Asia. Like a faulty radio transmission between Beijing and Singapore, this tape skirted the boundary between orchestrated chaos and apocalyptic epiphany. Truth is often stranger than fiction, and the contents of this tape hinted at the truths of our strange world.

The release is available for streaming right now on the Nasty Wizard Recordings bandcamp page: https://nastywizardrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/liquid-palace-connection-error

On side A Liquid Palace comes out blaring hard. Officially a noise band (unofficially a supergroup for people who really dig nerding out to recordings of white noise and feedback on Soundcloud) the group consists of electronic producers/synth makers/artists Meng Qi, Doctor Xiin (also half of Liberate Haze), Zpax, and Chen Zhe. It should come as little surprise that no two Liquid Palace performances include the same sounds or set up, yet what might come as a revelation to more skeptical listeners is the amount of space in their sound — rather than being an explosion of harsh noise Liquid Palace is very much a journey. This is a journey that Nasty Wizard Recordings are proud to commit to tape because when extraterrestrial life forms are allowed to set up Taobao accounts these babies are going to sell like hot cakes.

Side B gifts (((connection_error))) to your face: either a collaboration between three Singaporean noise musicians or a trio of international crime fighting men of mystery, who choose to conceal their true identities from villains and scalawags by making ear-bleedingly harsh soundscapes. Each member is a solo noise head/warrior for justice in his own right, consisting of drone/bass/Shaolin master s*i*n; effects/noise maker/ninja NZSDLX; and guitarist/cybernetically enhanced playboy Schizophrenic Wonderland. Individually they strike fear into the hearts of sound men and underworld kingpins alike, combined they represent humanity’s last hope of salvation. For instance the time NZSDLX snuck into the temple of The All Seeing Hand and single handedly took on their entire army of drug enhanced warriors. Or that other time when Schizophrenic Wonderland saved Singapore from the dastardly android legions of the insane Dr. Segway. Or perhaps that other other time when s*i*n defeated the dragon prince Gorbo in a tournament on a mystery island that seemed vaguely similar to one depicted in Enter The Dragon … Regardless of whether you appreciate noise music you should know the name (((connection_error))) because without their efforts you most likely would be dead by now. In (((connection_error))) we trust!

The cover of the tape is adorned with a cryptic representation courtesy of Liquid Palace’s Doctor Xiin, who is also a renowned visual artist and film maker as well as noise assailant. All of this combines to make a tape that is without doubt one of the most culturally significant releases from not just Nasty Wizard Recordings, but any label in the known galaxy. With a physical release show scheduled for September 30, 2017 at DDC in Beijing featuring a who’s who of Chinese experimental and electronic musicians the Liquid Palace and (((connection_error))) split is destined to change lives. So please, let it change yours.
