Shanghai Qiutian 上海秋天 (Yuyintang 育音堂 2021.01.17)
Shanghaiese math rock outfit Shanghai Qiutian returned with their ambitious new release Home：Revolution – which touches on the theme of ‘home’ and how it morphs over time and space, – last weekend with a two-night showcase at Yuyintang – the place where it all began for them. Turning the floor into the stage and allowing the audience to surround them (and even get up on stage – a first for many) – it was an intimate affair filled with friends, fans, family, and of course music.
There’s serenity at the core of the band’s sound – captured brilliantly by the acoustic ornamentation and the warm-hued vocalizations that supplement the invigorating, sweeping, and playfully tender arrangements – turning just about every other jam into a slow-burning singalong. The band teared through songs both old and new, never losing sight of the universal and emotional pull their music exacts.
