The Bad Molds – L’ULTIMO SALOON DEL WEST
The (Bad) Molds, headed by rugged, urban cowboy Liu Ge lean into their dusty downtrodden psychedelic cowboy roots even further on the delightfully cinematic L’ULTIMO SALOON DEL WEST. As the liner notes preface, the four-track EP, released on Space Fruity Records, is best viewed as ‘an imagined movie soundtrack’ and that couldn’t be more apt a phrase for the mood and atmosphere Ge strikes up. David Lynch vibes at the Desert Sun motel – endearing and haunting all at once – it’s great to have The Molds back and in their element.

The Bootlegs – I Don‘t Wanna Been Cool
One of last year’s loveliest surprises – the jangly rustic lo-fi indie rockers The Bootlegs – out of Qingdao – return with a new EP. While it may have traded in some of the lo-fi rustic graces for more direct dream pop allure, the trio still manages to reach a lot of the same highs as they pay tribute to the past while propelling riotously into the future. This isn’t more evident than on their track ’Thank you! New Pants’ – a gloriously unhinged heartfelt tribute to the original Chinese indie rockers. The lo-fi charms are still aplenty with one of the scene’s most exciting new bands.

Centered loosely around the anti-hero of an Internet-infested consumer-oriented world trying to leave his mark, it’s a leftfield aggressive barn burner of an album, one that pulsates with dark complexity and meticulous virtuosity, crafting a delirious, foreboding future.

lastboss – VHS BHS
A bit of breakcore; a bit of ambient soundtracking; and plenty of lo-fi electronica amongst hi-fi thrills – Zhuhai-based multi-instrumentalist and producer lastboss kicks off a new year of constant output with VHS BHS – once again displaying his richly diverse ear for ear-grabbing electronic music in all its incarnations – from slow-burning piano-led distorted vocal melodies to twitchy jungle rave music that’ll have your brain doing backflips. While it may lack a certain cohesion, it’s always a pleasure running amuck in the rich electronic mind of lastboss.
