Backspace 退格 – Six-Eyed Dragonfly 六眼蜻蜓
Backspace are back! The Beijing rockers whose sophomore release Ants Corrupt Elephant took the band’s paranoid-laced psych rock and turned it outwards, and now they’ve dropped the music video for single ’Six-Eyed Dragonfly’ – which loosely follows the story of a boy who finds solace in the dreams of a dragonfly, escaping urban life through its eyes and its habitat which in the end isn’t too far off from our own lives. Directed by Damo Yang and chock full of lush colors, cultish images, and a swirl of psychedelia that’s seductive in its allure, it’s Backspace at their finest and a perfect encapsulation of the band’s sound.
GOINDOWN – 晚风
I’m a sucker for one-take music videos. I’m also a sucker for music videos that play out backwards. Chengdu’s ska rock punks GOINDOWN have both going for them in the music video for their track ‘Evening Breeze’ – a somber look back of the past year (the track was written at the beginning of the pandemic). According to its director, Mao Er, clues are scattered throughout to give you a vague sense of the various turning points over 2020. But really, I just love the grainy, gritty deterioration of our protagonist going through a gauntlet of various trails on his way home, eventually clawing his way through the streets of Chengdu.
